Ear Infection (Otitis Externa)
Ear infections are extremely common in India due to humidity and the prevalence of floppy-eared breeds. Left untreated, they progress to middle and inner ear infections, causing permanent hearing damage.
Symptoms to Watch For
shaking head frequently
scratching at one or both ears
foul odour from ears
brown or black discharge in ear canal
redness and swelling of ear flap
tilting head to one side
crying when ears are touched
When to See a Vet
See a vet when you notice discharge, odour, or persistent head shaking. A swab test identifies whether the infection is bacterial, yeast, or mite-related — each requires different treatment.
Home Management
Gently clean the outer ear with a vet-recommended ear cleaner and cotton ball — never cotton swabs inside the canal. Do not use home remedies (oil, vinegar) without veterinary guidance as they can worsen infections.
Breeds Most Affected
Prevention
Clean ears weekly with vet-recommended cleaner
Dry ears thoroughly after bathing or swimming
Maintain regular grooming — excess ear hair traps moisture
Address underlying allergies which predispose to ear infections
Wait to see if symptoms resolve on their own when they are worsening
Give human medication without veterinary guidance
Attempt home treatment for a severe or emergency condition
Skip follow-up appointments once the dog seems better
Shop preventive gear
Tick prevention collars, cooling vests, and quality harnesses
