Heat Stroke (Hyperthermia)
India's summers are dangerous for dogs, particularly in cities like Delhi, Nagpur, and Chennai. Dogs cannot sweat and rely on panting to cool down. Heat stroke can cause brain damage and death within minutes.
This is a medical emergency
EMERGENCY: This is a life-threatening emergency. Cool the dog with room-temperature (not ice cold) water while rushing to the vet. Never use ice — it constricts blood vessels and worsens the situation.
Symptoms to Watch For
heavy, rapid panting
drooling excessively
bright red gums
vomiting
diarrhoea
confusion or disorientation
collapse
seizures in severe cases
Home Management
Move to shade or air conditioning immediately. Apply cool wet towels to neck, armpits, and groin. Offer small sips of cool water — do not force. Fan the dog while keeping wet. Rectal temperature below 39.5°C is the target. Continue cooling until vet is reached.

Prevention
Never leave a dog in a parked car even for 2 minutes
Exercise only in early morning or after sunset in summer
Always provide shade and fresh cool water
Know your breed risk — brachycephalic and thick-coated breeds are highest risk
Use cooling vests or damp towels during outdoor activity
Wait to see if symptoms resolve on their own when they are worsening
Give human medication without veterinary guidance
Attempt home treatment for a severe or emergency condition
Skip follow-up appointments once the dog seems better
Shop preventive gear
Tick prevention collars, cooling vests, and quality harnesses
